Virginia Flower Facts

Virginia is the spoken untamed land where the tribe of Pocahontas once lived. The English settled at Jamestown in 1607 and set the stage for the taming of the wilderness.

Virginia is the first and said to be the most faithful of England's settlements in America. It was named to honor Queen Elizabeth of England often referred to as the "Virgin Queen." King Charles II regarded the Virginians "the best of his distant children" and elevated Virginia to the position 'of dominion' along with England, Scotland, Ireland, and France. Thus today Virginia is commonly referred to as 'The Old Dominion'.

Chroniclers point to Virginia's history as 'America's history', a notable impression since Virginia is the largest and wealthiest colony and state and the birthplace of Southern and American culture. During the Civil War, Virginia saw more battles fought on her soil than any other state. The American Revolution ended with the surrender of Cornwallis in Yorktown. Also, Virginia holds the distinction of being the birthplace of eight U.S. presidents.

Modern Virginia is still distinct having been dubbed the "Internet Capital of the world". The Pentagon building in Arlington is the largest office building in the world. The Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel is the world's largest bridge-tunnel complex. The capital is Richmond, which was also the capital of the Confederacy – talk about history still.

And probably these things 'tamed' Virginia some more: the state held the first Thanksgiving in North America, in 1619; and the first peanuts grown in the country were farmed in Virginia.
