Chesapeake is an independent city located in the South Hampton Roads region of eastern Virginia, on the Elizabeth River. The Dismal Swamp Canal runs through Chesapeake as well.
The community was created in 1963 by the merger of Norfolk County and the city of South Norfolk; the latter is a designated National Register Historic District.
