Plano is a city in northeastern Texas, in the Collin and Denton counties of a large metropolitan region centered on Dallas. The city’s name was incorrectly thought to be Spanish for "plain," in reference to its geographical setting.
In the 1840s, the community settled and developed as a small agricultural center around 1872 after the coming of the railroad. After that, Plano became a cotton and cattle center. In 1960s, the city's main growth began, and continued when it annexed territory in the 1970s.
A much anticipated event in Plano is the hot-air balloon festival held each September. A popular tourist destination is the Heritage Farmstead, an 1891 homestead that was once part of a sheep farm and is now a museum.
