Grand Prairie is officially in Dallas County, on the eastern edge of the Grand Prairie region, although the community straddles Dallas, Tarrant and Ellis counties.
The community was first recognized as 'Dechman', after its founder Alexander McRae Dechman and was established on the Texas & Pacific Railroad. Tradition would have it that the town was renamed after a famous female actor stepped off the train and exclaimed "My, what a grand prairie!"
