Garland is located in Dallas County, on Lake Ray Hubbard. The city gained modest fame for being one of the inspirations of the television show 'King of the Hill' hosted by Mike Judge, himself a former Garland resident.
The community was founded in 1850 as a settlement of two rival towns - "Embree" and "Duck Creek" but eventually merged when a local post office was established for one location named "Garland" - after then Attorney General Augustus Hill Garland.
Garland today has around 220,000 residents, one of the most populated suburbs of the Dallas-Fort Worth metro area. There are five recreation centers, 40 playgrounds, 73 athletic fields, four group picnic pavilions, a marina, and more than 20 miles of trails serving the residents and occasional visitors.
Interesting sites in Garland are The Plaza Theatre, built in the 1940s, an important landmark and focal point for Garland; and The Pace House, a tastefully restored Victorian home built in 1895.
