Pennsylvania Flower Facts
Pennsylvania, one of the nation's most historic states, is traditionally called 'The Keystone State'. The keystone - as a vital part of an arch that all other parts depend upon - is evocative of Pennsylvania being the birthplace of independence and the Constitution. It is common and significant historical knowledge that Pennsylvania's vote for independence was noted as the imperative 'keystone' vote for a new government.
The 'keystone' moniker also quite aptly applies to Pennsylvania's geographic position as a link both between the Northeastern states and the Southern states, and between the Atlantic seaboard and the Midwest.
Pennsylvania is home to the grave of one of the most influential figures in the nation’s history. Boston-born Benjamin Franklin signed both the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution and later founded the University of Pennsylvania in 1742 – even the Philadelphia Zoo, the first public zoo in the country.
Historic Pennsylvania was also marked by Philadelphia, once the capital of United States and expectedly the site of the first presidential mansion. Also in this city, Betsy Ross made the first American flag. In 1784, the first daily newspaper was published. Philadelphia today is home to the 'Liberty Bell' and the first computer, since 1946.
Modern Pennsylvania is dominated by two major cities: Philadelphia is the largest, the only city in the state to accommodate more than a million residents; and Pittsburgh with its frantic port commerce, and major educational and technological centers. The capital is Harrisburg. Lancaster County area attracts most tourists for its "laid-back environment and charming landscapes."
