Ohio is named after the Ohio River that forms its southern border. "Ohio" is an Iroquois Indian word meaning "great water."
'The Buckeye State' is the Official nickname of Ohio referring to the abundance of buckeye trees in the state. Its capital is Columbus and its state flower is the scarlet carnation.
Modern Ohio has a noteworthy political status being the birthplace of seven U.S. presidents, namely Ulysses Simpson Grant, Rutherford Bichard Hayes, James Abram Garfield, Benjamin Harrison, William McKinley, William Howard Taft, and Warren Gamaliel Harding. William Henry Harrison, born in Virginia but settled in Ohio, is also one of Ohio's own.
Ohio is the site of the invention of the airplane, resulting from the experiments of the Wright brothers in Dayton. Orville Wright is an Ohioan, so is the first American to orbit the earth, John Glenn; and, the first man to walk on the moon, Neil Armstrong. Hence very aptly, Ohio is dubbed by technologists as "Birthplace of Aviation Pioneers."
Ohio is also the land of: the maker of America's first automobile, John Lambert; the first professional baseball team – the Cincinnati Reds; and, the first serving of the all-American favorite 'hot dog'.
Ohio certainly made life easier when Cleveland became the world's first city to be lighted electrically in 1879; and when it invented the cash register, ambulance service, traffic light, and police cars.
