The community was founded on a Northern Pacific spur line in 1913. This area was notorious as the setting for the Zip to Zap event that transpired on May 10, 1969. Originally intended as a spring break diversion, this event escalated to a riot in which thousands of unruly visitors participated. In the end, the final arbiters became the National Guard, pacifying the anarchic mob which had depleted the small community's resources.
