Yonkers has been termed "the sixth borough" as well as "the backyard of The Bronx," in reference to its location on the New York City border, which has added a touch of urban chic to the place.

The land on which the city is built was once part of a 24,000-acre land grant that ran from the current Manhattan/Bronx border at Marble Hill northwards for 12 miles, and from the Hudson River eastwards to the Bronx River. New Netherlands Director-General Willem Kieft gave the grant in 1645 to Adriaen van der Donck, the latter of which was known locally as the Jonkheer (a "young gentleman" or "squire"), which consequently spawned the name "Yonkers."
