Surprisingly, the name of the city was not taken from the animal of the same name; rather, the city of Buffalo is claimed to have been named after its location at the origin of the Niagara River. Beau fleuve is French for "beautiful river."
Some of its nicknames are "City of Lights" (in reference to its bustling nightlife – the most energetic nightlife district being Chippewa Street, between Main Street and South Elmwood Avenue), and "The Queen City" (in reference to its position as the second-largest city on the Great Lakes at the turn of the 20th century). Buffalo has also been called The Nickel City because of the buffalo on the back of American nickels in the early part of the 20th century.
