Newark is the seat of Essex County, on the Passaic River. The city is part of the New York metro area.
Founded in 1666, Newark is the nation's third-oldest major city, after Boston and New York. Early settlement has been called Pasaic Town and New Milford. One tradition says the present name was derived from Newark-on-Trent, a town in England; another says the name originated from the biblical "New Ark." The common nickname for Newark is "The Brick City."
Newark today has around 280,500 residents - New Jersey's largest and second-most diverse city, after Jersey City. Newark has the largest Portuguese population of any American city. There is also a large representation of other Latinos such as Brazilians, Ecuadorians, and Haitians, as well as Puerto Ricans, Italians, Jews, and Sub-Saharan Africans.
The blend of cultures is reflected in many local ethnic exhibits such as the Tibetan collection - considered one of the best in the world, in The Newark Museum.
