St. Cloud originally was divided into separate settlements each initiated by three extremely different men. The variations notwithstanding, the three settlements eventually merged into one city in 1856.
The name "St. Cloud" was inspired by the area's French heritage, being named after a locality in France. In time, granite deposits were uncovered from the St. Cloud area. The affluence of the deposits incited granite companies to ship their products worldwide.
Today, "Granite City" is a hub for education, retail, recreation and tourism.
Home to 59,458 (est. 2003), St Cloud is located in the West Central Lakes Region northwest of Minneapolis on the banks of the Mississippi River.
