Worcester is the seat of Worcester County, on the Blackstone River.
John Adams taught at a village schoolhouse in Worcester before contributing to the revolution and founding of the United States. More significantly, the city heard it first when the Declaration of Independence was first publicly read in Massachusetts by Isaiah Thomas. Then Worcester held it first when Thomas printed the first dictionary in the country. And listened to it first when a Worcester radio station first played a Beatles song in the country.
Modern Worcester has around 176,000 residents and is regarded as a college town owing to the important presence of Clark University, founded in 1887, Sigmund Freud delivered his select American lectures here in 1909; and the University of Massachusetts Medical School, among many others.
Worcester has the room for the largest collection of arms and armor in the western hemisphere, in Higgins Armory Museum. And yet another interesting collection - toilets and sinks from various periods of history - at the American Sanitary Plumbing Museum.
