Maryland was one of the thirteen colonies that revolted against British rule in the American Revolution.

Climate in Maryland is heavily dependent on elevation, rainfall, and proximity to water. The Eastern Shore region is mostly subjected to a humid subtropical climate of hot summers and mild winters. Snow falls more often over the Piedmont region.

The hustle and bustle of Maryland's economy is strongly concentrated in the tertiary service sector – which, in turn, is strongly influenced by location. Transportation is a major service activity, centered on the Port of Baltimore.

Maryland has maintained a wholesome intellectual environment with a number of educational and medical research institutions. Technical and administrative tasks for the defense/aerospace industry and bio-research laboratories, make the most of Maryland's proximity to the center of government in Washington, D.C. The staffing of satellite government headquarters is heavily concentrated in the suburban Baltimore area.

Food production is extensive in Maryland. This stems mainly from the boom in commercial fishing particularly in Chesapeake Bay and off the short Atlantic seacoast. Some of the most frequent catches are the blue crab, oysters, striped bass, and menhaden.

Baltimore along the Northeast Corridor is served by Amtrak trains. Washington, D.C., Baltimore, and other towns are linked by MARC trains, which are operated by the Maryland Transit Authority. The Washington Metro subway and bus system are available in Montgomery County and Prince George's County.
