The town of Waterproof is located in Tensas Parish, Louisiana. Of its total population of 834 at the time of the 2000 census, African-Americans are the majority at 87.41%, while White Non-Hispanics only make up 11.87% of that figure.
How this town got its name is quite an interesting story. A steamboat captain once yelled out to Abner Smalley, one of the area's early settlers, that he is "waterproof". The captain made the comment as his steamboat was working its way to land, and saw Smalley was standing high and dry on a small strip of land in the area that was often under water.
