Opelousas is the seat of St. Landry Parish between Lafayette and Alexandria. As of 2003 estimates, the city had an estimated population of 22,753.
Of dense Cajun heritage, Opelousas is by far the third oldest city in Louisiana. During the American Civil War, the community was selected as the Confederate capital of Louisiana in 1862. The city is a cultural center for zydeco, a Cajun offshoot of folk music.
