Lexington-Fayette is a merged city-county (with coextensive population, territory and government) officially called Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government. However, most locals and visitors refer to the city-county as the 'City of Lexington'. The recall is partly attributed to Lexington's historical distinction as "a city before Kentucky" - being founded in 1775; a decade and seven years before Kentucky became a state.
