Topeka is the capital city of Kansas as well as the seat of Shawnee County. The name of the city is attributed to a Native American term for "potatoes" or "a good place to grow or find potatoes." Population here was estimated at 122,008 in 2003.
Topeka began as a settlement on a railroad stop, established by nine antislavery settlers from Lawrence and New England in 1854.
