Fort Wayne is named after a United States military fort established in 1794 by General "Mad" Anthony Wayne, on a site that is historically known as Kekionga, the traditional capital of the Miami nation. It has been a running joke among local residents that General Anthony Wayne stayed in Fort Wayne for only 4 days before moving on.
Fort Wayne was a major manufacturing center of the northeastern United States in the mid-20th century. Major employers included General Electric, International Harvester, and Tokheim gasoline pumps. Phelps Dodge, Rea Wire, and Essex Wire made up the largest concentration of copper and enamel wire manufacturing in the world.
Fort Wayne also employs a huge chunk of the population in the transportation and logistics sector, with Sirva, Norfolk-Southern railroad, Triple Crown Intermodal, and Kitty Hawk Air Cargo pooling for more than 2,500 local employment.
As of the 2000 census, the total population is 220,486.
