On the Des Plaines River, the city of Joliet in Illinois is simultaneously situated in both Will and Kendall County. It is a suburb southwest of Chicago with 2003 population estimates of 123,570.
In 1834, Joliet was once a town named Juliet. Historians believe the town was named after settler James B. Campbell's daughter. Others pronounce it as a corruption of the name of French Canadian explorer Louis Jolliet, who visited the area in 1673.
