State: Delaware
Delaware Flower Facts
Delaware was one of the original 13 states that revolted against British rule in the American Revolution. It is known as the "First State" as it was the first to ratify the United States Constitution.
Geographically, Delaware is the second smallest state in the United States. The capital is at Dover. Since the great majority of Delaware is a part of the Atlantic Coastal Plain, the climate is toned down somewhat by the ocean. The southern third of the state has a consistently mild subtropical climate year-round.
Delaware's major employers are concentrated in government; chemical and pharmaceutical companies; and the banking, manufacturing and farming industries. Chicken farming is extensive in Sussex County. Dover Air Force Base, located just outside Dover is one of the major employers in Central Delaware.
Delaware houses the oldest black church in the country which was chartered by Peter Spencer in 1813 as the "Union Church of Africans" (now the A.U.M.P. Church). The Big August Quarterly held in Wilmington is the oldest such cultural festival in the country – it is sometimes referred to as the "Big Quarterly" or "August Quarterly." The tradition was started by Peter Spencer in 1814 in connection with the "quarterly" conference of the African Union Church.
A fun, interesting Delaware trivia: the Punkin Chunkin is one of the traditions in Sussex County that derives beguiling enjoyment from its very eccentricity – leftover pumpkins from the Halloween season are sent skyrocketing almost one mile high in the air by hydraulic or air-powered cannons.
