Stamford or "Lock City" is a city located in Fairfield County, southwest of Bridgeport between Darien and Greenwich. In Old English, Stamford means "stony ford." The city began in 1641 as a settlement called Rippowam, a name culled from the adjacent river of the same name. The settlement was founded by 29 families on a land purchased from Native Americans.
As Connecticut's fourth largest city, Stamford has an estimated population, as of 2003, of 120,107. Early in 2004, Stamford was the country's safest city, according to the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
