Connecticut Flower Facts
The name Connecticutcomes from an Algonquin Indian word which means "on the long tidal river." Connecticut has been nicknamed the "nutmeg state." Consequently, a resident of Connecticut is called a "Nutmegger." The USS Connecticut was named in honor of this state.
Connecticut is one of the original thirteen states and one of the thirteen colonies that revolted against British rule in the American Revolution. New Haven and Hartford alternated as centers until the latter was pronounced the official capital of Connecticut in 1875.
Connecticut dwarfs other states in the country with its extreme wealth. Unlike most other states, Connecticut does not have county governments or county seats – there is only the state government and the governments of the local municipalities. This adds to the extremely expensive cost of living in Connecticut. While the state houses four cities (Bridgeport, Hartford, New Haven and Waterbury) with poor economic conditions, the state in general is very wealthy. The middle class vacated the state when the homes in the suburbs started selling at around $450,000. Not surprisingly, Connecticut has more million-dollar plus homes than any other state in the U.S.
Highways dictate the major flow of transportation in Connecticut. Bradley International Airport is located in the central part of the state. Bus service is supplied by Connecticut Transit, owned by the Connecticut Department of Transportation. Most Connecticut residents rely on private vehicles to get around.
President George W. Bush was born in New Haven, Connecticut.
