Coloradois a picture-perfect location of blue skies, purple sunsets, emerald forests, and red rocks. The state is famous for the towering peaks of the Rocky Mountains, which dominate the western half of the state. High plains loom over the eastern part of Colorado.

The state was named after the Spanish word "Colorado" which means "reddish colored." This is presumed to be in reference to the red sandstone structures that dot the area. Another possible derivation is the reddish brown color of the Colorado River.

The state capital and largest city is Denver, Colorado. The Denver-Aurora metropolitan area houses over one-half of the population of Colorado.

The federal government is the driving force of Colorado's economy. A number of important federal facilities including the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) and the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs are the major employers of the state. There is an assortment of other federal agencies and federally owned lands in Colorado. This is due to the abundance of National Forests and four National Parks located within the state. Numerous private companies that have headquarters or are operating in Colorado essentially coordinate with governmental agencies, raking in additional revenue for the state.

Denver International Airport is the latest addition to America's major airports, known for its top efficiency and stylish décor. Amtrak's assurance to its passengers is nonexistent traffic, with comfortable railway service going through the rolling plains, mountains and canyons of Colorado.

The USS Colorado was named in honor of this state.
