In 1891, a real estate tycoon named Donald Fletcher founded a town on the plains east of Denver and named it after himself, but he fled the town two years later, leaving the new residents with bond payments for non-existent water. The town was renamed Aurora in 1907, and suburban development after World War II plucked it back into shape.
Aurora was shoved into the international media spotlight for seven weeks during the fall of 1955, as President Dwight D. Eisenhower struggled to bounce back from a heart attack at Fitzsimons Army Medical Center.
Aurora today is the third largest city in the state of Colorado. In 2004, Aurora was named "Sportstown" for Colorado by Sports Illustrated on the magazine's 50th anniversary. It is one cool city that lets dogs play "off leash" at the Grandview Dog Park located off Quincy Avenue.
Just minutes away from Denver International Airport, Aurora is effortlessly accessible by way of the Interstate 70, Interstate 225 and E-470 roads.
