Vallejo is located near San Francisco, Fairfield, and Benicia, where the Sacramento River empties into San Pablo Bay. With inhabitants estimated at 119,700 in 2003, Vallejo is the gateway to the Napa Valley wine country.
Vallejo is known for its Six Flags Marine World theme park. It is equal parts amusement park and animal park, also boasting of an oceanarium exhibiting dolphins and other exotic marine creatures.
Another noteworthy Vallejo attraction is the Mare Island Naval Shipyard. Although defunct since 1996, the shipyard is the oldest and was once the largest on the west coast. Visitors could still tour it.
The name of the city was derived from General Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo who initiated the settlement of the area in 1844. Many historic Victorian houses still survive in downtown Vallejo. Twice established as the state capital in the 1850s, Vallejo further rose into an important shipping and naval center.
