Modesto is the seat of Stanislaus County, at the northern end of the San Joaquin Valley, on the Tuolumne River. The community was laid out by the Southern Pacific Railroad in 1870 and was named for the Spanish term for "modest" after banker William C. Ralston declined to have the community named after him.
The city was once an agriculturally based area owing to its location in the heart of one of the greatest agricultural regions in the county, the fertile San Joaquin Valley. Orchards still bloom during springtime in modern Modesto, but the city serves more as a bedroom community to more than 207,000 residents.
