The history of Chula Vista goes millions of years back through prehistoric fossils of both land and sea types. Many of the Native American Indians in San Diego today are descendants of the Kumeyaay tribe who wandered Chula Vista for hundreds of years. Chula Vista is Spanish for "beautiful view."
In 1888, citrus trees were discovered to be the most successful crop for the area, which eventually led to Chula Vista becoming the largest lemon-growing center in the world.
In February 1916, the Hercules Powder Company constructed a kelp processing plant in Chula Vista. Kelp was an ideal source of materials used in the production of explosives, used extensively by the British armed forces in World War I, making Hercules the largest kelp harvesting fleet in the world during that period. The site of the plant is known as Gunpowder Point, where the Chula Vista Nature Center now stands.
As of the 2003 census, the city had a total population of 201,210.
