Anaheim was founded in 1857 by fifty German families: grape farmers and wine makers from Franconia. The name of the city is a fusion of the word "Ana", after the nearby Santa Ana River, and "heim", a common Upper German place name originally meaning "home." Prior to this, the settlement was known as Campo Alemán, the Spanish term for German Camp.
