Tempe is a city located in Maricopa County in central Arizona. Pronounced Tem'pee, the name was said to have been suggested by Darrell Duppa after comparing the Salt River valley near a 300-foot-tall butte to the Vale of Tempe near Mount Olympus in Greece.
Tempe is the location of the head offices of US Airways and the main campus of Arizona State University.
Tempe is a two-time winner of the All-America City Award given annually by the National Civic League in 1984/85 and 2003/2004. Tempe is the site of one of the nation's biggest New Year's Eve parties, and of one of the three Presidential debates in 2004 and Super Bowl XXX.
