Mesa was founded by Mormon pioneers in January 1878. The city has retained much of its Mormon influence in roughly one-fourth of its total population.

The diversity of the city's economy manifests itself in the harmonious co-existence of residents belonging to different rungs of the socio-economic ladder. Mobile-home parks and estates from the more upscale parts of town are indiscriminately spread out over the Mesa area.

Mesa is home to Falcon Field, which was originally opened at the beginning of World War II for the training of British RAF pilots. It was relinquished to the City of Mesa at the end of the war.

Alternative/pop-punk band Jimmy Eat World hails from Mesa. MLB Player Adam Hyzdu retires to Mesa during the winters. Mesa is also the summer home of the Mesa Miners professional baseball team of the Golden Baseball League.

As of the 2004 census, the total population is 437,454.
