Huntsville is the seat of Madison County. The community straddles Madison and Limestone counties and lies in the Tennessee River Valley - between the Tennessee River and the Tennessee border.
In the 1940s, Huntsville was still a small quiet town with only 13,150 inhabitants. The population grew at the onset of the World War II, when Redstone Arsenal was developed. The center was later used for missile research.
Its close history with U.S. space missions earned for Huntsville the nickname "Rocket City, USA." Modern Huntsville, with around 165,000 residents, is also the location of the NASA – Marshall Space Flight Center and the National Historic Landmark designated U.S. Space & Rocket Center, home to Aviation Challenge, Space Camp, and the only Saturn V rocket.
The Huntsville Madison County Public Library, founded in 1818, is Alabama's oldest continually operating library system. The library has Alabama's highest materials circulation rate, and features daily public programs.
